In addition to these activities, our Healthy Lifestyles committee chair, Nehal Outlaw, has brought yoga movement in to the classrooms. She is currently working to create school gardens around our campus. These gardens will not only help get the kids out of the classroom and learning in a dynamic environment, but it will also help us teach them about the importance of nutrition! Healthy bodies = Healthy Minds = Successful Students.
To get to the Gold level, all foods and beverages served and offered during school meet the USDA's Smart Snacks in School Nutrition Standards for Students and Staff.
What are the Smart Snacks Standards for foods? To qualify as a Smart Snack, a snack or entrée must first meet the general nutrition standards:
• Be a grain product that contains 50 percent or more whole grains by weight (have a whole grain as the first ingredient) OR
