We hope you are recovering from the first week of school! Boy, new routines are HARD! Our family is certainly glad for an extra day of rest.
Two important things to note this week:
- Monday is Labor Day so there is no school for staff or students.
- Thursday at 5:00pm in the media center. Join us for a community meeting with WCPSS district representatives and the architects for the new school. They want your feedback on the current design and what elements you want included in the new building. If you cannot attend, we will be taking notes and have those to share with you in next week's newsletter and on FaceBook.

One of the many tools that we used at Swift Creek is called Zones of Regulation. Very often, it is difficult for our students to explain in words how they are feeling. The Zones program allows students to use colors to identify how they are feeling. A staff member might ask a child, "What zone are you in?" Then the child can simply point to the color that reflects how they are feeling. After the zone is identified, the staff member can help the child choose a tool that will help the child get back into the green zone.
Zones has been a great program for our family. I often use it with my own now 5th grader. You'll love learning more about this program and all our Behavioral Health programs at the Creek!

For meals at school, Wake County Public School System advises that Nutrition standards for school meals are aligned with the latest nutrition science. Age-appropriate meals are designed based on the meal pattern established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and dietary specifications including limits on fats, sodium and calories. They also advised that they perform a nutrient analysis using specially developed software for school meal programs as well as adapt their menus to reflect the recent nutritional guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Meals are made fresh daily and offer a variety of appetizing choices that include quality proteins such as 100% beef and whole muscle chicken, low-fat dairy, an assortment of fruits and vegetables and more whole grains.

SCES 90TH ANNIVERSARY: DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that our gym is one of the last wooden floor gyms in Wake County?
The gym was added to the school in 1956. The classrooms under the gym were for art, music, and band. The gym had locker rooms that included showers. (The showers are still there and boy, are they tiny!) The original curtains on the stage were blue and gold, which is how the school colors were picked in 1973. By 2000s, these maroon curtains were on the stage.
In 1976, the gym was dedicated to Principal Jerry Keen, who passed away unexpectedly in Dec.
During the 90th anniversary event on Saturday, Sept 24, the gym will be open. We are hoping to have alumni come speak about their memories of Swift Creek in the gym. We will also have a memory wall where folks can add their favorite memories of Swift Creek. Make sure you check it out!

Did YOu Miss This? Message from Principal Propst
Good afternoon, Swift Creek families! We have had such a great week kicking off the 2022-2023 school year. There is excitement in the air this year as we celebrate the past 90 years and plan for the future.
Every year after we're underway, I like to send some reminders about after school carpool procedures. I know it’s rough, but it is already much better than last year at this time, and will certainly improve as students and staff adapt to the routines.
The carpool lane is a one-way flowing lane. Parents and visitors enter the parking lot from the Tryon Road entrance, and exit through the carpool lane onto Yates Mill Pond Road. There will be five carpool pick-up spots designated by colored cones. Students will be dismissed by a staff member to wait at a colored cone. If there is a problem with picking up any carpool student, we will ask you to pull forward. Please note the following:
- Car riders will be dismissed from their classrooms as their carpool number comes up. It is important for each vehicle picking up a student to have an official SCES carpool tag prominently displayed until your child is in the car.
- To ensure the safety of all car riders and maintain an orderly dismissal process, all early checkouts for appointments must be prior to 3:15 pm.
- We value your child’s safety and cannot release your child to someone who is not listed or does not have a valid ID.
- Students must be picked up by 4:15 pm. If you arrive after 4:15 pm, you must come into the office to pick up your student.
- Students should only get into vehicles from the passenger side next to the curb.
- If you do not have your tag number, you will be asked to park and go to the office to sign your child out.
- Parking along Yates Mill Pond Road is prohibited at all times.
- The Yates Mill Pond Road drive is EXIT only.
- If a parent chooses to walk on campus to pick up a student, they must walk up to the front entrance of the school and display their tag number to a staff member on duty.
- Any changes in a student’s normal transportation pattern should be made by sending a note to the teacher. Otherwise, the teacher will send the student the normal way.
- Last minute changes to transportation must be made by calling the school before 3:00 pm.
Yours for a bright future,
Darrell Propst, Principal
