HEAR US ROAR!
Thank you to Ms. Sutton and our amazing Cougar Chorus (of 55+ members) for an amazing night of singing and community building. To get a sense of the amazement, check out our YouTube videos. Chorus singing Community sing along: Jingle Bells and Deck the Halls Hello everyone,
We made it to the last week in December. So much excitement for the kids this week! Good thing that students will be learning about the character strength of Self Control in the Positivity Project. :-) I hope you have a wonderful week! If there is anything that I can do to help you, please let me know. I love being part of this special community and am happy to lend a hand wherever I can. I am also a strong believer in communication (after all that's my real world job ;-). So if I have information to share, I am happy to share it with you (either through this email or the PTA website or Facebookand sometimes all 3!) Thanks for you do to make our school so special! Marie Dexter, PTA President The Positivity Project (P2): Self-Control This week in the Positivity Project, students will be learning about self-control. In Tuesday folders, you will receive a green Character Strength card with more information. WHAT IT MEANS You have the ability to control your emotions and behaviors. You think before you act. WHY IT MATTERS For individuals, self-control helps them delay the short-term gain in pursuit of a greater, long-term success. A group’s ability to demonstrate self-control often appears in the form of “self-monitoring.” This means that individuals demonstrate honesty with one another about successful group practices. When things are unsuccessful, group members have the ability to adjust roles in the interest of overall group success. It’s a crucial strength in our modern society and its mentality of impulsivity and consumption. Monday: Tacky Sweater Day! We kick off this week of holiday cheer with Tacky Sweater Day! Wear your craziest sweater! Tuesday: PTA meeting and Chorus Concert 6:30pm & Shine Bright Like a Christmas Tree Show your "Brilliance" & shine like a Christmas Tree! Dress up like a Christmas tree. I cannot WAIT to see these outfits. At 6:30, join us in the gym for a very short PTA meeting followed immediately by a Chorus Concert! You won't want to miss it! I know Ms. Sutton and all the Chorus members have been working so hard on this event! Wednesday: Candy Cane Day! Wear your red and white to dress like a candy cane! Thursday: Winter Glow Dance. Winter Wonderland Day! Today is the big day! Students will celebrate the holiday season at the Winter Glow Dance in the media center. We will be using black lights so encourage your child to wear white (or neon colors) so they glow at the dance. It is also Winter Wonderland Day! Wear white and dress like a snowman or a winter wonderland. Friday: Early Release. School Dismisses at 1:15. Box Top Collection Day! Wear Your Flannel. It is the last day before our Winter Break!
We Need Watch DOGS! Dads, we need you in our school. A great opportunity is to sign up to be a Watch DOG for the day. We have slots available this upcoming week. This program focuses on education and safety in schools by using the positive influence of fathers and father-figures for a two-fold purpose: 1) to provide positive male role models for students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important and 2) to provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying. Fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, older brothers, cousins are asked to spend a day at the school volunteering. Summer is Coming and Camp Invention Will be Back June 24-28 It is never too early to think about summer camp! Led by local teachers, this program has tapped into kids' natural curiosity since 1990, giving them the opportunity to become innovators through teamwork and immersive, hands-on creative problem-solving. All students Kindergarten through 5th grade can attend. Mrs. Coles (5th grade teacher) is our Camp Director. Marie Dexter is our Camp Parent. Please contact them if you would like more information about the program. We also have many parents who are lovers of this camp, so if you would like their references, please let me know. Register your child at www.campinvention.org Make sure you select the Swift Creek location! What a white Sunday!
Wow! I can't remember the last time I saw snow before Christmas. I hope everyone is home warm and safe. I love snow days on the weekend. I am fortunate enough that I don't have to work on the weekends, so that means I can enjoy the day with the kiddos. Snow ball fights, sledding, pancakes, and hot cocoa. So many special family traditions for snow days. I hope you can stay home today and enjoy the snow with your children! If you do have to work today, please be careful and stay safe! Have a great week! Marie The Positivity Project (P2): Humility/Modesty This week in P2, students will be learning about humility/modesty. What it Means You do not seek the spotlight. You let your actions speak for themselves. Why It Matters Developing humility is associated with positive developmental outcomes in individuals. It allows a person to honestly reflect on their abilities and acknowledge how and where they can improve. Humility opens them up to new ideas, advice, and (consequently) abilities that pride, arrogance, or pretentiousness often block. Therefore, humility makes them desired members of a team. Tuesday: Short PTA Meeting Followed by Cougar Chorus Concert Join us at 6:30pm in the gym for a very short PTA meeting followed by a Cougar Chorus Concert! We have 50 members in chorus this year, and I know Ms. Sutton has been working so hard with them on this concert. You won't want to miss it! Do You Know Someone Who'd Like to Receive These Emails? I started these emails a couple of years ago as 1) a way to get myself straight about what is coming up for the week 2) sharing that information with other Swifty families. I know not everyone is receiving these emails. Grade parents are encouraged to share these emails with their classes. If YOU know someone who would like to receive this information, please tell them to contact me at [email protected]. I don't want to spam folks, but I am happy to share this information with anyone. These emails are also posted weekly on the PTA website. Ms. Lipe's Class is School Spirit Day Winner Friday was School Spirit Day! Ms. Lipe's class won with 55% participation! This class definitely has some school spirit. This is the second time they've won the spirit award this year! Go little Cougars! Snow Days are a Great Time to Work on Your Science Fair Project! Only 3 weeks of school until we enjoy a Winter Break! I know this is an exciting time of year for so many families. I hope it is a special time for your family as well. Last week, I met with Mr. Propst and Mrs. Smith and we planned some exciting events for the winter and spring. It is such a wonderful time to be at the Creek! Have a great week! Marie The Positivity Project (P2): Kindness This week in P2, students will be learning about kindness. What it Means You are generous to others and you are never too busy to help out. You enjoy doing good deeds for other people. Why It Matters For individuals, kindness is correlated with desirable developmental outcomes. It is related to other-oriented emotions, like empathy (the ability to experience the emotional state of another person) and sympathy (the tender emotion of concern for another’s difficulty). On a group level, kindness is very important. In addition to empathy and sympathy, the character strength of kindness is indicative of an individual’s moral reasoning capacity and level of social responsibility. Tuesday: Newsletters in Tuesday Folders The Dec edition of the Swift Creek Current will go home in Tuesday folders. You can get a sneak peek at http://swiftcreekeswcpssnetptahtml.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/2/2/24227387/dec42018_english.pdf Friday: School Spirit Day So far, we've had a Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade class win the spirit award for most participation on spirit day.
