No School Monday: Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday
Did you know?
- Martin Luther King, Jr’s birth name was Michael; however, his father changed his own name and that of his five-year-old son after traveling to Germany and being inspired by Protestant Reformation Leader, Martin Luther.
- King is the one of three figures who have national holidays in the US honoring them (George Washington & Christopher Columbus).
- King went to college at 15! King was such a gifted student that he skipped grades nine and 12 before enrolling in 1944 at Morehouse College, the alma mater of his father and maternal grandfather, where he earned a degree in sociology. He received a Bachelor of Divinity from Crozer Theological Seminary in 1951 and then a Doctorate in Systematic Theology from Boston University in 1955.
- King received a postmortem Grammy for best spoken word recording in 1970. This was for the famous and controversial speech “Why I am opposed to the war in Vietnam” which was recorded on Vinyl.
If you are interested in learning more about Dr. King or sharing his influence with your children, check out the children's book recommendations from the King Center.

Need a break? No problem! We will also be having Family Night at the book fair. So stop by the media center and grab a new book to love. For our sensory sensitive students, we also plan a Quiet room where you can go take a break. We will also have a schoolwide Scavenger Hunt (can YOU find all the hearts?) and a room with some board games.
We are looking for committee members to help with planning, decorations, set up and clean up for this event.
If you are interested, contact Marie Dexter at [email protected].

We will have International Night again on Thursday, May 18 from 5:30-7:30. Again, this event will be on the field (because really it can't rain twice, right?)
We are looking for familes to present about their countries, groups who might be interested in performing that night, games for the center of the field, and volunteers.
If your family is interested in presenting, sign up at https://tinyurl.com/scesInternational2023
If you know a performer who might be available, have games that we can borrow for the middle of the field, or want to help, contact Marie Dexter at [email protected].
Now Accepting Officer Nominations for Next Year
Here is the timeline for nominations and elections:
- Now - April: Nominating committee will be accepting nominations.
- In the April PTA meeting, the Nominating committee will present the slate of nominees to the general membership. Please note that nominations can continue to be accepted, but we must present the final list of nominees to PTA membership 10 days before the April PTA meeting. Any nominations that come in after that will have to be presented on the floor of the May PTA meeting.
- In the May PTA meeting, we will hold elections for PTA officers for next school year.
- On July 1, the new officers officially begin their term.
If you have any questions or nominations, please contact a member of the Nominating Committee.
5th Grade Timeline for the Rest of the Year
During our PTA meeting this week, Mrs. Boyd and Mrs. Coles presented the timeline for the rest of the year. A picture is worth a thousand words, so here are some of the slides from that presentation. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Boyd [email protected] or Mrs. Coles [email protected].
Breaking News: 5th Grade Awards Ceremony June 7 9:30am on the field
Mark your calendars for June 7 9:30am. We will meet on the field. Please plan to bring your own chairs. (The 5th grade students will be using the folding chairs that we have at the school.)
The PTA is looking for volunteers to help with this event:
- If you are 5th grade family, you are welcome to create a poster that we will hang on the fence on the tennis court.
- We need folks to help with set up. We will need to be on the field around 8 or 8:30 that morning.
- The PTA usually provides a sweet treat (such as cupcakes) for our 5th graders after the event. We are looking for someone to purchase and deliver these cupcakes to the school on the morning of June 7.
- We need help decorating the "stage" for the event. Balloons and plants are some of the ways that we have decorated in the past.
- We need help cleaning up after the celebration. The approximate time of clean up will be 11:00.
