Celebration of Brilliance
If you have never been to a Celebration of Brilliance, here is an outline of the event:
- We kick off the excitement with our Cougar cheer.
- Then Mrs. Chadwick reviews with the students the character strengths and the aspects of the Other People Matter mindset (from the Positivity Project).
- Next, each teacher is welcome to the stage to recognize their students, where they receive a certificate and get to shake the hand of either Mr. Propst or Mrs. Smith.
- Our specialists (music, art, media, PE) recognize a class for demonstrating a character strength. The kids love it when their class is named. The teacher receives a certificate that he or she can proudly display outside their classroom door. I have to share one incredible nugget from this year's event. Mrs. Wils, our media specialist, recognized Mrs. Kress' 3rd grade class for Fairness. She shared how the students in Mrs. Kress' class are one-by-one sharing a series of books (the Wings of Fire series). It was such a heartwarming story and just a glimpse of our incredible students.
- We conclude the event by singing our school song, which was written for our 85th anniversary.
International Night was a huge success!
- Dr. Barr taught the students several folk dances. That way, they were prepared for the folk dancing on the basketball court on International Night.
- Mrs. Wils in media had students use Google Earth to find some of the less famous landmarks in each country.
- Outside Mrs. Phillips' class, there was a display of International Foods.
- On the morning announcements, Mr. Propst and Mrs. Smith shared some fun facts about schools around the world. (Thank you to Saki Taylor for gathering these facts for us!)
Actual event on Thursday night was also a celebration of our persistence and teamwork! Early on, rain threatened to cancel the event at the very last minute, but our community persisted and came out in droves!
Thank you to all our host families who crowded under tents to share their stories with our community! Again, thank you, thank you, thank you to these families for creating their beautiful displays.

The night was filled with music provided by Dr. Barr. Her selections were the perfect fit for the event. She also led students and some adults (including Mr. Propst) in folk dancing on the basketball court. The students already knew many of the dances because Dr. Barr had been reviewing them during music class. It was so fun to watch our students dance.
Laura Monaghan also performed an Irish dance, which believe me is incredible to watch. Talk about an excellent workout! Laura also talked to the students about her costume and explained Irish dancing.
Our food trucks were another big hit. In fact, the Belgian waffle truck completely sold out! At the end of the night, the owner of the Belgian waffle truck told me how bad he felt having to turn families away. We might have to invite him back again for a future event!
An event this size cannot happen without an army of volunteers. I know I said it last week, but again, I want to thank ALL the people who made this possible.
- All of our host families (listed above) who made this event possible. Without YOU, there wouldn't have been an International Night.
- Dr. Barr for planning the folk dancing and performances.
- Mrs. McIntyre for sharing the pottery wheel with the kids
- Mrs. Boyd, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Chadwick, and our Student Council. This was the first big opportunity our Student Council had this year to show their stuff. These students were eager to help and they did a fabulous job!
- Our committee members: Mr. Propst, Mrs. Smith, Dr. Barr, Jenae Delayan, Saki Taylor, Annie Pilz, Laura Monaghan. Thank you for attending endless meetings, for sharing the workload.
Cereal Drive Ends Thursday!
So far, we have collected 300 boxes! That will help feed 300 families when we deliver these boxes to the Food Bank of Eastern North Carolina!
The teacher whose class collects the most boxes will be the one to tip off the dominos. Here are the standings so far.
- 3rd place-Ms. Kress' class with 22 boxes
- 2nd place-Mrs. King's class with 24 boxes
- 1st place-Mrs. Fallon's class with 44 boxes
The last day to turn in a cereal box is Thursday, May 19. Have your child turn in their cereal boxes to their teacher. Or you can drop off your cereal boxes with the front office. If you do, please put a sticky note on the boxes so we know which teacher to credit for your donation.
Thank you to Mrs. Chadwick and the Swift Creek Service Club for organizing and collecting all these boxes!
We are still looking for volunteers to help set up the cereal boxes on Friday starting around 2pm. Sign up now!

WE Need Garden Gnomes for the Summer
I had my own heartwarming story in the garden this week. At the end of International Night, I found a first grader and her family in the garden. I remembered this particular first grader had been part of the group to plant the peas in garden bed 1. Now, the pea plants are bursting with vegetables. So I encouraged her (and her little sister) taste one of the snap peas. The pride on her face as she tasted a pea that she helped plant was priceless.
We need your help to keep our gardens thriving over the summer. It is also a great opportunity for families who don't have a home garden to harvest some yummy fresh vegetables.
If you can help, sign up now!
Want to help but nervous? No worries! We can arrange a training session. Contact Marie Dexter at [email protected] so we can arrange a time with our gardener extraordinaires.
90th anniversary Stories: Due June 30
We ask you to share this request with others as well.
Here is how you can help:
- Submit a story or memory at https://tinyurl.com/sces90
- Share this link with your Swift Creek friends, family, community members, every where! If someone has memorabilia, yearbooks, pictures, school spirit wear, etc that we can display at the anniversary party, ask them to contact Marie Dexter at [email protected] or 919-602-9993.
Check out this fun poem that I found while digging through some Swift Creek memorabilia. It is from the Poetry book that 5th grade students created in 2006. I can't wait to see what other amazing stories and nuggets we can collect.
