Please remember that we have several Teacher Workdays for kids in the next few weeks.
- This week, no school on Wednesday. It is a Teacher Workday.
- Next week, no school on Tuesday, Nov 2. It is Election Day.
- No school on Thursday, Nov 11 for Veteran's Day.
- This week the school board decided that Friday, Nov 12 will be a non-instructional day for students. This means that students will NOT be in school on that Friday.
- We have a full week of school Nov 15-19. (At Swift Creek, we will have a virtual cultural arts performance this week.)
- And then Thanksgiving is here! Students have school Nov 22 & 24 but are off for the Thanksgiving holiday Nov 24-26.

THE POSITIVITY PROJECT: creativity
What It Means
You come up with new and original ways to think about and do things.
Why It Matters
Creativity is associated with intrinsic motivation, meaning the process of creation is an end in itself. The work is not accomplished in order to receive an award. Creativity is also correlated with self-actualization, or fulfilling one’s talents and potential. Those with the strength of creativity have the urge to create and build something new and original. The act of creating itself makes them happy.
On a group level, creativity is vital. It helps us solve seemingly impossible problems, create something we never knew we wanted, or simply see the world in a new way. Technological examples include the printing press, refrigeration, electricity, automobiles and the internet. Just think of what we’d be missing without Renaissance art, Enlightenment thinking, Harlem Renaissance jazz, or hip-hop emerging from the South Bronx in the 1970s and 80s.

WEEKLY WELLNESS: national EAt Better, Eat Together Month!
So, for the rest of October, set a goal to have at least one meal together a week. Make it a family affair by giving each member a task in helping to prepare and clean up the meal.
PICK A THEME! Have breakfast for dinner, experiment with new foods; however you chose to do family dinner night, just be sure to enjoy the time together!
Fall Scholastic Book Fair:
Monday, November 8 thru Wednesday, November 10
For students and staff, Preview Day is Monday and sale days are Tuesday and Wednesday.
Information will be provided so Parents/Family/Friends are able to set up an e-wallet and "shop" the fair even though they cannot attend the in-school event. They can select items they wish to purchase, and volunteers will do the physical shopping for them. This will allow the school to receive double the proceeds versus virtual purchases.
Here's the link for the Fair home page:

Set Up Your e-Wallet NOW
Simply go to our school's website to start: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/swiftcreekelementaryschool
After you create your e-wallet, you can share the link with family/friends if they wish to contribute funds.
Last Chance: REflections Entries Due Next Sunday, Oct 31
ALL students (K-5) are welcome to submit entries as photographs, pictures, stories, film, or music. For more information about this year's program, contact Reflections chairs at [email protected].
ENTRIES ARE DUE BY SUNDAY, OCT 31!
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
1. Review the rules and guidelines for your category.
Guidelines and Rules for Each Category:
2. Create your masterpiece! The theme is I Will Change the World By ...
3. Complete this Google form. Using this form, you will do the following:
- specify the name of the student, the type of entry
- An important piece of the submission is student's statement of work. This is a minimum of 10 words but no more than 100 words that explains the piece. The judges really look at this statement and it weighs heavily in judging.
- Provide parental permission for the student to participate in Reflections program.
- Upload the artwork. (If that doesn't work, you can also email it to [email protected].)
We Need Judges!
Are you or someone you know a lover of the arts? We are also looking for 1 more judge to help with this competition! We are specifically looking for someone with a background in visual arts (drawings, models, etc) If interested, please email [email protected]. Judging will be the first day of Nov and it will be virtual (so folks can do it from home). It should take maybe an hour of time.
LOOKING FOR WEEKEND GARDEN GNOMES
We are looking for families to help water and weed our vegetable garden on the weekend. Even if it has rained that week, you can still come check out our new garden station. It includes activities and lesson plans for all grade levels. If you love gardening and don't have a resource at home to share with your kids, come experience our school garden!
